Time to Spring into Action!

The days are longer, the thermometer is rising, it's SPRING!! Clip on the leash and let's get going!

Take Your Dog Out to Lunch
Boston has lots of dog-friendly restaurants and cafes where you can sit outside and enjoy the company of your dog while you sip your cappuccino or grab a burger. Observing a few rules of etiquette will ensure you (and your dog) are always welcome: Keep your dog leashed and do not let him socialize with other diners unless he is invited. Keep him close to your table or chair and out of the waiter's path. Bring your own water bowl or ask for a paper bowl if necessary (Health laws prohibit pets from using restaurant dishes.) Secure your dog to your chair, not the table. And finally always call ahead to confirm that dogs are allowed at outdoor tables. Many Newbury and Boylston St. cafes as well as eateries in the South End are especially pet-friendly. Look for recommendations here:

Sign up for + dog Field Trips
Sun, fun, fresh air and training tips all come together in + dog field trips. Our field trips are great opportunities to expose your dog to everyday life situations in a learning environment. It's also a great way for you to meet other + dog students and their dogs for future networking on your own. Save the date! See the + dog calendar for dates of future field trips.

Jog With Your Dog
Good for you, good for your dog, jogging helps build up muscle tone and release pent up energy. A few basics: Start slowly, (around 10 minutes once a day) and build up to longer sessions. (Of course, if your dog has been in the + dog fitness program and on our treadmill all winter, he's probably already fit enough to keep up with you.) Remember to jog against the traffic. Grass is easier on your dog's tender feet than concrete or asphalt, especially in summer. Be careful you don't let older dogs overdo it, despite their appearance of enthusiasm. Take water along on the hot days and attach safety reflective clothing or strips to you and your dog at night.

Get Connected
Looking for someone to share doggie adventures with this spring and summer? + dog's Canine Connections is an optional directory that connects like-minded + dog students (intermediate to advanced) with one another for dog walks, training practice, exploration, exercise, socialization and fun.

Call for more information about our Canine Connections network.

Take advantage of Spa Fridays
Spring is mud season! Let professional groomer, Simone, detail your dog. Not only will he smell good, he'll feel good, too! Besides, all our dogs could use a little help getting rid of that winter coat.See + dog announcements for details.

Take a Hike
Massachusetts is home to over 70 state parks and reservations offering a wide variety of terrain and scenery. With a few exceptions (Walden Pond Reservation and Boston Harbor Islands State Park) and a few restrictions (Moore State Park, Plum Island State Reservation, Cape Cod National Sea Shore and Sandy Point Reservation), dogs are permitted at MA state parks except in swimming areas. Keep your dog on a leash or long-line so you can maintain control when you meet other hikers, dogs and equestrians. See www.hikewithyourdog.com. Discover your favorites this spring and summer.

Take Your Dog on Vacation
Disney for dogs? Well, maybe not Disney, but
www.bringfido.com (a dog travel directory) ranks more than 10,000 cities worldwide for their popularity among dog owners and general "dog friendliness." You can check out destinations, hotels, campgrounds, parks & beaches, restaurants, canine events, even airline policies. If your plans absolutely exclude taking along your furry friend, don't despair. You can send him on his own adventure vacation at camp + dog.

Take a class
Spring is a great time to tune up your dog's education. Imagine how much fun you can have this summer with a well-trained well-socialized companion with whom you can venture anywhere calmly and confidently. Jump-start your dog's training now or sign up for + dog's Canine Good Citizen classes, Therapy dog classes and more! See you soon!

Happy Training!
